AU women’s basketball defeats College of New Rochelle

ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University women’s basketball team shot 48 percent from the field and forced 36 turnovers in defeating visiting College of New Rochelle, 94-26, Saturday afternoon at the McLane Center.

Alfred (9-8, 3-5 Empire 8) had 29 steals and committed only 13 turnovers while holding the visitors to 24 percent shooting. AU dominated the boards, outrebounding the visiting Blue Angels, 53-28.

Sophomore point guard Lyndsay Murphy (Almond NY/Hornell) paced Alfred with 10 points, 11 assists, six rebounds and four steals. Senior forward Melanie Jackson (Andover, NY/Wellsville) contributed 15 points, five steals and a game-high eight rebounds. Freshmen guard Kacey Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) netted eight points, seven assists and three steals, while junior guards Abbey Schaffnit (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) and Emily Steen (South Pasadena, CA/Purnell School) each delivered 12 points. Steen made all six of her shots from the field en route to a career high in points.

The College of New Rochelle (2-15) was led by Casey Cappelli, who scored 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Tiffany Mann chipped in with seven points and four rebounds.

Alfred is in action next on Tuesday, Feb 3, at 6 p.m. at RIT.
