Saxons drop 75-58 decision at RIT

ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University men’s basketball team came up short at RIT Tuesday evening, losing to their Empire 8 Conference foe, 75-58.

RIT shot 48 percent from the floor and outrebounded AU 42-32. The conference leading Tigers remained unbeaten in Empire 8 play with an 11-0 mark and improved their overall record to 15-4. Alfred (7-11, 2-7 Empire 8) was solid from the free-throw line, shooting 85 percent (17 of 20), but connected on only 33 percent from the field.

Senior forward Carl Embury (Perry, NY/Perry) led AU with 18 points and four rebounds. Sophomore guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) had 12 points, three rebounds and a pair of assists, while junior forward Jared Patt (Nelson, PA/Elkland) added 12 points, six boards and two steals.

Shawn Roe netted a game-high 20 points, making six of seven shots from three-point range, to lead RIT. Mark Carson had 13 points and a game-best 11 rebounds, and Brendan Harder chipped in with 10 points and eight boards.

Alfred is in action next on Friday, Feb. 6, at 8 p.m. at conference opponent Stevens Institute of Technology.
