AU women’s basketball team falls to Ithaca

ITHACA, NY -- The Alfred University women’s basketball team was hurt by poor shooting from the field in their 64-39 loss at conference foe Ithaca College on Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Saxons (10-10, 4-7 Empire 8) shot 21 percent for the game to 42 percent for Ithaca. AU shot only 17percent in the first half, to 46 percent for Ithaca, and the Lady Saxons trailed at intermission, 28-16. For the game, Alfred made only 56 percent of its shots from the free-throw line to 71 percent for Ithaca, and the host Bombers outrebounded AU, 47-39.

Junior forward Hannah Meier (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) led AU with five points, nine rebounds and two assists, while junior forward Libby Meier (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) scored seven points to go with seven boards and a blocked shot. Senior guard Melanie Jackson (Andover, NY/Wellsville) netted six points and six boards.

Ithaca (14-7, 10-2 Empire 8) was led by Elissa Klie’s 11 points and had eight boards. Lindsay Brown had six points and 10 rebounds and Katherine Bixby contributed nine points and five assists.

Alfred is in action next on Tuesday, Feb 10, at 6 p.m when the Lady Saxons host Nazareth College.
