Elmira tops AU men’s basketball team, 70-64

ELMIRA, NY – Host Elmira College rallied in the second half to defeat the Alfred University men’s basketball team, 70-64, Friday evening.

Alfred (7-15, 2-11 Empire 8) led at the break, 32-28, after making six first-half three-point shots. The host Soaring Eagles came back after intermission, canning five long-range shots of their own and outscoring the visiting Saxons, 42-32. For the game, Elmira made 50 percent of its shots to 41 percent for Alfred.

Senior forward Carl Embury (Perry, NY/Perry) netted a game-high 24 points, sinking nine of 16 field goals (four of nine from three-point range) to go with a game-high nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) had 15 points to go with eight rebounds, eight assists and a pair of steals.

Junior guard Bobby Barry (Duanesburg, NY/Duanesburg) scored nine points and sophomore point guard Gary Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) and junior forward Jared Patt (Nelson, PA/Elkland) each scored eight.

Bobby DiPiazza scored 21 points and dished out four assists to pace Elmira (4-18, 2-11 Empire 8). Jon Adamson scored 14 and pulled down six rebounds, and Bryan Mathews added 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Alfred is in action next on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 8 p.m. at St. John Fisher.
