AU women’s basketball team falls in overtime at Elmira
AU (11-11, 5-8 Empire 8) trailed at the half, 28-16, as the Lady Saxons made only 27 percent of their shots. Alfred fell behind by 16 points (39-23) four minutes into the second period before going on a 31-14 run to take a 54-53 lead with 4:34 left. Alfred trailed by three, 60-57, when freshman guard Christina Jordan (Cornwall-on-the-Hudson/Corwall) hit a three-pointer with just under a minute left to tie the game at 60-60.
AU never led in overtime, and Elmira led by as many as four. The Lady Saxons had a chance to tie the contest in the waning seconds, but missed a long three-pointer at the buzzer.
AU made 14 three-pointers in the game, including 10 in the second half, when the Lady Saxons made 54 percent of their field goals. Sophomore point guard Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) canned four long-range shots and finished with a game-high 28 points. Jordan also made four threes and finished with 12 points.
Senior forward Melanie Jackson (Andover, NY/Wellsville) had eight points, eight rebounds, three assists and four steals before fouling out late in regulation. Junior guard Lisa Button (Troupsburg, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) made three three-pointers to finish with nine points.
Elmira (9-13, 4-9) was led by Becca Fratz with 17 and Becky Peterman with 15 points. Erin Rupell added 12 points and five rebounds and Marcia Coakley chipped in with 14 points.
Alfred is in action next on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 6 p.m. at St. John Fisher.
