AU women’s basketball team completes season sweep of St. John Fisher

PITTSFORD, NY – The Alfred University women’s basketball team defeated host St. John Fisher, 54-51, Tuesday evening to complete a season sweep of the Cardinals and keep its slim Empire 8 Conference playoff hopes alive.

Alfred (12-11, 6-8 Empire 8) forced 23 Fisher turnovers (15 with steals) and held the hosts to 33 percent shooting. The Lady Saxons shot 39 percent from the floor and made six three-point shots to only two for the hosts. Alfred made eight of nine foul shots (89 percent), while the Cardinals were only able to cash in on 17 of their 25 free throw attempts (68 percent).

Junior forward Hannah Meier (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) scored a game-high 16 points to go with five rebounds and three steals to pace Alfred. Sophomore point guard Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) had 14 points, five rebounds, six assists and a pair of steals; senior forward Melanie Jackson (Andover, NY/Wellsville) had 11 points, six boards and two steals; and junior forward Libby Meier (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) chipped in with six rebounds and three steals.

Mary Kate Comfort led Fisher (15-8, 8-6 Empire 8) with 16 points and five rebounds. Colleen Mahoney had 12 points and Kristen Taliento added 11 points and a game-high eight boards.

Alfred is in action next on Friday, Feb. 20, at 6 p.m. against Hartwick before wrapping up the regular season with a 2 p.m. matchup Saturday, Feb. 21, against visiting Utica. Alfred needs to win its last two games and have Fisher lose its last two (Friday at home against Utica and Saturday at home against Elmira) for the Lady Saxons to secure the fourth and final spot in the Empire 8 Conference championship tournament.
