Hartwick tops AU men’s basketball team

ALFRED, NY — Visiting Hartwick College beat the Alfred University men’s basketball team, 57-42, Friday night at the McLane Center.

AU (8-16, 3-12 Empire 8) trailed at the half, 31-23, as the Saxons made only 36 percent of their shorts to 46 percent for the Hawks. AU kept the contest close by making six first-half three-point shots.

The Hawks stayed hot from the field after intermission, sinking 48 percent of their shots, while AU shot only 22 percent in the second half. Hartwick outrebounded the Saxons 21-8 in the first half and 44-21 for the game.

Sophomore guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) and junior guard Bobby Barry (Duanesburg, NY/Duanesburg) each canned four three-pointers on their way to scoring 15 and 12 points, respectively. Junior forward Jared Patt (Nelson, PA/Elkland) added eight points and a team-high four rebounds and three assists.

Jan Cocozziello paced Hartwick (12-12, 5-10 Empire 8) with a game-high 28 points to go with nine rebounds, while Ramond Doyley added seven points and a game-high 14 boards.

AU wraps up the season Saturday, Feb. 21, at 4 p.m. at home against Utica.
