AU women’s ski team qualifies for nationals; men’s team takes fifth at regionals

GLENS FALLS, NY – The Alfred University women’s ski team will compete in the United States Collegiate Ski Association (USCSA) national championships after its third-place finish in the Mideast Regional championships.

The top three teams at regionals, held Friday and Saturday at West Mountain in Glens Falls, qualified to compete at the USCSA nationals. Alfred placed fifth in Saturday’s slalom, a day after taking third in the giant slalom, to place in a tie for third with the University of Buffalo. UB won a tiebreaker with Alfred but declined the invitation to nationals, instead giving Alfred the Mideast Region’s third and final bid. The AU women will be making their third straight trip to nationals, scheduled for March 4-7 in Winter Park , CO.

The AU men took fifth in Saturday’s slalom and, combined with the team’s fifth-place finish in Friday’s GS, finished in fifth place in the combined team standings.

Sophomore Elissa DeGolyer (Silver Springs, NY/Letchworth) took third in the slalom to pace the AU women Saturday. Junior Lauren Pfeifer (Livonia, NY/Livonia) took 21st in the slalom, a day after winning the GS, and sophomore Megan Caggianelli (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) was 24th.

Senior Joel Buchanan (Almond, NY/Scio) was 18th to top the AU men in Saturday’s slalom. Freshmen Harrison Hendricks (Sodus, NY/Sodus) and Steve Barton (Dansville, NY/Dansville) were 21st and 22nd, respectively.
