AU men’s lacrosse team opens season with 10-6 win at King’s

WILKES-BARRE, PA – The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team opened the 2009 season with a 10-6 victory over host King’s College Saturday afternoon.

Junior attack Justin Gill (Gowanda, NY/Gowanda), a transfer from Herkimer Community College, netted four goals in his AU debut. Sophomore attack Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) had a goal and three assists and sophomore midfielder Justin Kieffer (Middletown, MD/Middletown) scored twice.

After spotting the Monarchs a 3-1 lead after one period, Alfred scored three unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead three minutes into the third. King’s would tie the score at 4-4 two minutes later, but the Saxons scored the next two to go up 6-4 and led the rest of the way. King’s closed the deficit to 6-5 before AU tallied three unanswered to take a 9-5 lead four minutes into the final period. King’s scored midway through the fourth to make it 9-6 before Gill netted his fourth score with 36 left in the contest.

Each team had 28 groundballs and AU held a slight 10-9 advantage in faceoffs. Alfred had seven penalties but allowed only one man-up goal. The Saxons took advantage of nine King’s penalties to tally three power-play scores.

Junior midfielder Mike Russo (Mattydale, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) and freshman midfielder Dave Malave (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) each had a goal and an assist for AU, while freshman attack Drew Belica (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) netted one goal. Senior midfielder Evander Wilson (Penfield, NY/Penfield) picked up a team-high five groundballs for AU.

T.J. Lyon had two goals for King’s (0-1) and Rusty Booth had a goal and two assists to go with a game-high six groundballs.

Sophomore Adam Schutz (Geneva, NY/Geneva) made 10 saves in goal for Alfred, while Tim Cassi stopped 11 shots for King’s.

AU is in action next on Saturday, March 7, at 1 p.m. at home against Brockport.
