AU softball team takes two in Florida

COCOA BEACH, FL – The Alfred University softball team swept a pair from Daniel Webster College Sunday as the Saxons opened a 12-game slate in Cocoa Beach, FL. AU won the opener, 12-4 in six innings, before taking second game, 17-0 in four innings.

In the first game, junior shortstop Samantha Rollins (Hornell, NY/Hornell), playing her first game for AU, went 2-for-4 with a homerun, two RBIs and two runs scored. Rollins was a two-time All-American at Monroe Community College before joining the Saxons this seasons.

Junior third baseman Jesika LeBarron (Campbell, NY/Corning West) went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs; junior outfielders Shannon Mather (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) and Jessica Figallo (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) each had two hits, a run scored and one driven in; senior catcher Nicole Messura (Albion, NY/Albion) went 1-for-1 with two walks, a run scored and two RBIs; and freshman Molly Shepherd (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) had a hit and a run scored.

Freshman Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) earned the win on the mound for AU, tossing five innings of relief and allowing two earned runs on three hits while striking out five and walking one.

Sophomore Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke), a transfer from Monroe Community College, threw a no-hitter in the second contest, which was ended after four innings due to the 10-run rule. Cary struck out five and walked four.

Figallo was 4-for-4 with two runs scored; junior second baseman Karen Folts (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) was 3-for-3 with a double, four RBIs and a run scored; sophomore first baseman Ashley Passaro (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) hit a homerun and double and had two RBIs and two runs scored; sophomore utility player Madison Snyder (Medford, NY/Patchogue-Medford) went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs; LeBarron hit two doublers, scored three times and drove in a pair; Rollins was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI;.and freshman Sarah Scanlon (Mishawaka, IN/Mishawaka) had a hit, a runs scored and one driven in.

AU played against Mt. Ida at 9 a.m. today (March 9) and against University of New England at 11 a.m. today. The Saxons take on Finlandia at 9 a.m. Tuesday and Penn State-Allegheny at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
