AU men’s lacrosse team defeats Sewanee, 8-5

SEWANEE, TN – The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team remained unbeaten on the season with an 8-5 win over host Sewanee University Monday afternoon.

Junior attack Justin Gill (Gowanda, NY/Gowanda) and junior midfielder Sean Roberts (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) each netted two goals to pace the Saxons (3-0, 0-0 Empire 8). Sophomore Adam Schutz made 12 saves in 56 minutes of action to get the win in goal for AU.

The score was 1-1 after one quarter, with AU sophomore midfielder Justin Kieffer (Middletown, MD/Middletown) opening the scoring 1:36 into the contest and Sewanee’s Neat Clark knotting the score with 3:31 left. AU would then outscore the Tigers 5-0 in the second (Gill scored what proved to be the game winner with two seconds left in the half), and 2-1 in the third to put the contest out of reach.

Sewanee netted three unanswered goals in the fourth to close out the game’s scoring.

Junior midfielder Mike Russo (Mattydale, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse), freshman midfielder Dave Malave (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) and freshman attack Paul Eaton (Buffalo, NY/St. Francis) each scored a goal for Alfred.

Sophomore attack Mark Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) dished out his team-leading fifth assist. Gill's goals were his sixth and seventh of the year, which leads the team.

Freshman goalie Steven Bonura (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) played the final four minutes in net for Alfred but was not called on to make a save.

Clark and Michael Johnson (one assist) each finished with two goals for Sewanee (0-4), while Will Grimes chipped in with one goal. Stewart Calder went the distance in goal for the Tigers and made seven saves.

Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, March 11, at 7 p.m. at Birmingham (AL) Southern.
