AU men’s lacrosse team stays perfect with win at Birmingham Southern
Freshman attack Drew Belica (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) added two goals for the Saxons, who improve to 4-0 on the season. The AU defense played well, holding Birmingham Southern scoreless in five man-up opportunities. AU, on Belica’s third-quarter score, tallied one man-up goal in six chances.
Belica’s power play goal, his second score of the contest, came with 6:23 left in the third and gave Alfred a 5-1 lead. Birmingham Southern’s Jacob McPherson scored with 2:26 left in the third and Dylan Krupa followed 4:55 into the fourth to make it 5-3. The Tiger’s would get no closer, as Gill’s unassisted goal with 2:25 left closed out the scoring.
Sophomore Adam Schutz (Geneva, NY/Geneva) went the distance in goal for Alfred, stopping eight shots and picking up a team-best six groundballs. Sophomore attack Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) had a goal and five groundballs. Freshman midfielder Dave Malave (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) and sophomore midfielder Justin Kieffer (Middletown, MD/Middletown) each had a goal and junior midfielder Mike Russo (Mattydale, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) added an assist.
McPherson, Krupa and Christopher Buechele each netted unassisted goals for Birmingham Southern (1-4). Cameron Overton played 52 minutes in goal for the Tigers, allowing five goals and making eight saves. Ben Jacob played the final eight minutes in net and allowed a goal while stopping two shots.
Alfred is in action next on Thursday, March 19, at 4 p.m. at home against SUNY Morrisville. The Saxons open their Empire 8 Conference schedule March 25 at 4 p.m. at Ithaca.
