Softball team moves to 8-0 with sweep of Penn State-Beaver

COCOA BEACH, FL – The Alfred University softball team shut out Penn State-Beaver in two games Thursday afternoon in Cocoa Beach, FL. AU won by scores of 12-0 and 3-0 to improve to 8-0 on the season.

In the first game, junior shortstop Samantha Rollins (Hornell, NY/Hornell) went 4-for-4 with two singles, a double and a triple, drove in four runs and scored twice to pace the AU offensive attack. Sophomore Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) earned her fourth pitching victory of the season, going seven innings and allowing one hit with seven strikeouts and one walk. In four starts this season, Cary is 4-0 with 32 strikeouts while allowing one run on only four hits.

Freshman Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) went 2-for-2 with a run scored and one driven in; junior third baseman Jesika LeBarron (Campell, NY/Corning West) had a hit, two runs scored and an RBI; freshman Molly Shepherd (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) had a hit, a run and two RBIs; and junior outfielder Shannon Mather (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) had a hit, scored once and drove in a run.

Freshman pitcher Claire Bennett (Mumford, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) got the win in the second game, throwing four shutout innings on one hit and striking out four. Freshman Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) struck out three over two scoreless innings of relief before freshman Sarah Scanlon (Mishawaka, IN/Mishawaka) tossed a scoreless seventh and struck out two to earn the save.

Junior Lauren Peterson (Abington, MD/Harford Tech) went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI and LeBarron had a hit, a run and an RBI to lead the AU offense. Rollins went 2-for-3; junior centerfielder Jessica Figallo (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) had a hit, a stolen base and a run scored; and sophomore first baseman Ashley Passaro (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) had a hit and a run.

Alfred plays four more games in Florida before returning home Sunday. The Saxons take on Finlandia at 9 a.m. Friday and Norwich at 11 a.m. Friday. On Saturday, AU plays Norwich at 9 a.m., with an 11 a.m. contest against SUNY Purchase to follow.
