Adams, Tobin lead Saxons past Keuka

ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University women’s lacrosse team rallied to beat visiting Keuka College, 15-13, in the Saxons’ season opener Wednesday evening at Merrill Field.

Sophomore attack Michelle Adams (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) had eight goals and an assist and junior attack Emily Tobin (Penfield, NY/Penfield) assisted on six scores while netting two goals of her own.

AU twice came back from three-goal deficits, the second time after Keuka scored the first two goals of the second half to take a 10-7 lead. Alfred responded with four unanswered goals — three by Adams and one by junior midfielder Kate Simonds (Park City, UT/Park City) — over a seven-minute period to take an 11-10 lead with 16:15 left in the game. Keuka scored the next two to go back up, 12-11, with 13:44 left before AU answered with four straight (three by Adams) to take a 15-12 lead with 22 seconds left.

Sophomore midfielder Elyse Caldwell (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) had two goals and an assist; junior attackers Bailey Umphries (Heuvelton, NY/Heuvelton) and Abbey Schaffnit (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) each had a goal; sophomore midfielder Allyson Klopp Derby, NY/Lake Shore) had a pair of assists; and Simonds assisted on one goal for Alfred (1-0, 0-0 Empire 8). Adams, Tobin and junior defender Amanda Sullivan (Lexington, MA/Lexington) each picked up a game-high five groundballs for the Saxons.

Sophomore attack Brandy Shafer (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) had five goals and an assist to lead Keuka (0-2, 0-0 NEAC). Senior attack Brenna Leach (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) had three goals and sophomore attack Brittany Murray (Heuvelton, NY/Heuvelton) added two scored. Junior defender Jenn York (Rochester, NY/MCC) tallied a game-high five groundballs.

AU sophomore Kate Baughman (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) made six saves in goal for AU, while Keuka’s senior netminder, Audrey Randall (Fabius, NY/Fabius-Pompey) stopped 10 shots.

Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, March 25, at 4 p.m. at Wells.
