AU women’s lacrosse team knocks off Wells, 12-5

AURORA, NY – The Alfred University women’s lacrosse team remained unbeaten on the season with a 12-5 victory at Wells College Wednesday afternoon.

Wells (1-3) scored first and held a 3-2 lead midway through the opening half before AU (2-0, 0-0 Empire 8) exploded with eight unanswered scores. The Lady Saxons tallied the last five goals of the first half to take a 7-3 lead into intermission, then put the game away by scoring the first three of the second to take a 10-3 advantage with just under 20 minutes left in the contest.

Junior attack Abbey Schaffnit (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) scored three goals to pace Alfred. Junior attackers Emily Tobin (Penfield, NY/Penfield) (two assists) and Bailey Umphries (Heuvelton, NY/Heuvelton), and sophomore attack Michelle Adams (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) each netted two goals. Sophomore Kate Baughman (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) made three saves in goal for AU.

Emily Lotkowictz scored a game-high four goals for Wells, while Liz Barclay made 10 saves in goal for the Express.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, March 28, at 3 p.m. at home against Medaille.
