AU men’s lacrosse team falls to Stevens

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team dropped a 13-5 decision Saturday afternoon to visiting Empire 8 Conference foe Stevens Institute of Technology.

Alfred (5-2, 0-2 Empire 8) stayed with Stevens for two quarters, playing the Ducks to a 4-4 tie at the half, but Stevens would score nine unanswered goals in the third period to take command of the game.

Sophomore attack Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Hamburg) kicked off the scoring in the first period with an unassisted goal. Zoyhofski also tallied two assists on the Saxons’ second-quarter goals. Junior attack Justin Gill (Gowanda, NY/Gowanda) scored near the end of the first period to tie the game at two, and later assisted on a second-quarter goal by junior midfielder Mike Russo (Mattydale, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse). Freshmen attack Drew Belica (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) scored a goal in the second period to even the score at four, off an assist from Zoyhofski.

In the decisive third quarter for Stevens, James Napolitano scored twice while Alex Couture tallied two assists. Matt Keating also picked up a goal and an assist for Stevens (6-3, 2-0 in Empire 8). For the game, Couture and Keating each finished with a goal and three assists.

Sophomore Adam Schutz (Geneva, NY/Geneva) made 16 saves in goal for AU, while picking up a team-high seven groundballs. AU senior midfielder Evander Wilson (Penfield, NY/Penfield) was second on the team with five groundballs Stevens goalie Dave Decker made eight saves while allowing four goals.

Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, April 1, at 4 p.m. at Medaille.
