English equestrian team competes at Cazenovia and St. Lawrence

CANTON, NY — The Alfred University English equestrian team competed over the weekend at Cazenovia and St. Lawrence.

No team scores were reported in the shows held Saturday, Feb. 28, at Cazenovia and Sunday, March 1, at St. Lawrence.

Earning first place blue ribbons for AU in the Cazenovia show were sophomore Barb Koziol (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) in intermediate equitation over fences; freshman Ronja Ogrodnik (Spencer, NY/Spencer-Van Etten) in advanced walk-trot-canter; junior Michelle Applebaum (Applegate, CA/Maidu) in beginner walk-trot-canter; freshman Kelly Rinebold (Ontario, NY/Wayne) in novice equitation on the flat; and senior James Blum (Colebrook, CT/King Low Heywood Thomas) in walk-trot.

Sophomore Maire Cosgrove (White Haven, PA/Bishop Hoban) was second in intermediate equitation over fences and third in intermediate equitation on the flat; junior Alica Pickett-Hale (Concord, NH/Concord) and sophomore Michelle Flannery (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) both placed second in novice equitation on the flat; and senior Lauren Graves (Slingerlands, NY/Guilderland) was second in beginner walk-trot-canter.

First-place riders for AU in the St. Lawrence show were junior Beth Ulbrecht (Penn Furnace, PA/State College) in intermediate equitation over fences (she was also third in intermediate equitation on the flat; Pickett-Hale in novice equitation on the flat; sophomore Johanna Moore (Summit, NY/Morristown-Beard) in novice equitation on the flat; Ogrodnik in advanced walk-trot-canter; Rinebold in novice equitation on the flat (she was also second in novice equitation over fences; and Applebaum in beginner walk-trot-canter.

Koziol was second in intermediate equitation on the flat and third in intermediate equitation over fences; Cosgrove was second in open equitation on the flat and third in intermediate equitation over fences; and Flannery was second in novice equitation on the flat.

The AU English team competes next at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone II, Region II championships March 28 in Canton, NY, hosted by St. Lawrence University.
