AU men’s lacrosse team wins at Medaille

BUFFALO, NY – The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team ended a two-game losing streak with a 16-12 victory at Medaille College Wednesday afternoon.

AU (6-2, 0-2 Empire 8) jumped out to an 8-1 lead after one period, when the Saxons outshot the host Mustangs 18-5 and converted two of three man-up opportunities. Sophomore midfielder Justin Kieffer (Middletown, MD/Middletown) opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 32 seconds in and junior attack Justin Gill (Gowanda, NY/Gowanda) followed suit with 10:50 left.

Medaille scored 39 seconds later to cut Alfred’s advantage in half before the Saxons tallied six unanswered to close out the first period scoring. AU sophomore attack Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) had two goals and an assist in the quarter, while Kieffer and junior midfielder Mike Russo (Mattydale, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) each had two goals.

Medaille came back in the second, outscoring AU 5-1 to trail by only two (9-7) at the halftime break. The Mustangs’ Dave Bennett had three of his team’s scores in the quarter and would finish the contest with a game-high eight goals. Alfred outscored Medaille 4-1 in the third to take a 13-8 lead going into the final period. Medaille scored the first two of the fourth to pulled within three (13-10) midway through the period, but Alfred answered with two scores of its own at the 6:50 and 6:11 marks to put the game away.

Russo finished with four goals and Zoyhofski had two goals and five assists to lead AU. Gill (one assist) and Kieffer each finished with three goals, and freshman attack Drew Belica (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) had three goals and a pair of assists. AU won 19 of 29 face-offs, with freshman midfielder Sean Bennett (Geneva, NY/Geneva) winning 11 of 16 draws and picking up four groundballs. Sophomore midfielder Kevin Kostyk (Tabernacle, NJ/Seneca) won seven of 12 face-offs and grabbed a team-best six groundballs.

Joe Gleco had two goals and two assists and Jim Luthart had three goals for Medaille (1-6).

Sophomore Adam Schutz (Geneva, NY/Geneva) played the first 59 minutes in goal for Alfred, making 12 saves and allowing 11 goals. Freshman Steve Bonura (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) played the finals minute in net and stopped two shots while allowing a goal. Ben Dlugosh went the distance in goal for Medaille and made 12 saves.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, April 4, at 4 p.m. at home against Empire 8 Conference rival Elmira.
