Host Utica knocks off Saxon men's lacrosse team

UTICA, NY – Host Utica College defeated the Alfred University men’s lacrosse team, 11-7, Saturday afternoon.

Utica held a slim 5-4 lead after one quarter before outscoring AU 4-1 in the second to take control of the contest. Alfred drew to within three goals, at 9-6, with 5:19 left in the third before Utica scored the next two — at 1:08 of the third and 12:00 of the fourth — to put the game out of reach.

The host Pioneers outshot Alfred 45-30 and held a 32-21 advantage in groundballs. With the loss, Alfred falls to 8-3 overall (1-3 Empire 8), while Utica improves to 6-05 (1-3 Empire 8).

Junior midfielder Mike Russo (Mattydale, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) had two goals to lead Alfred. Sophomore attack Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier), freshman midfielder Dave Malave (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River), junior attack Justin Gill (Gowanda, NY/Gowanda), sophomore midfielder Kevin Kostyk (Tabernacle, NJ/Seneca) and freshman attack Paul Eaton (Buffalo, NY/St. Francis) each had one goal. Freshman attack Drew Belica (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) had two assists and Zoyhofski had one.

Corey Boulio had three goals, an assist and seven groundballs, and Michael Brodhead and David O’Connell each had two goals and one assists to pace Utica.

Sophomore Adam Schutz (Geneva, NY/Geneva) played 59 minutes in goal for Alfred and made 16 saves while allowing 11 goals. Schutz also picked up a team-high six groundballs and caused four turnovers. Freshman goalie Steve Bonura (Shroeham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) played the final minute and made one save. Travis Wright went the distance in net for Utica and made 11 saves while grabbing seven groundballs.

Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, April 15, at 4 p.m. at home against RIT.
