AU softball team prominent in national statistics rankings

ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University softball team ranks high nationally in several categories, as do four individual players, according a statistical report released by the NCAA.

The latest NCAA Division III report is for the week ending Sunday, April 12, and includes Alfred’s first 20 games. The Lady Saxons (20-2, 4-2 Empire 8) have played two other games this week; stats from those games will be included in this weekend’s report.

As a team, AU ranks sixth in the nation in scoring (8.7 runs per game); seventh in batting average (.388) and slugging percentage (.587); eighth in homeruns per game (.95); 11th in winning percentage (.900); 13th in fielding percentage (.971); and 30th in earned run average (1.61).

Junior third baseman Jesika LeBarron (Campbell, NY/Corning West) leads the nation in runs batted in per game (1.90) and is fifth in doubles per game (0.50). She ranks 10th in batting average (.522), 14th in slugging (.881), and 33rd in on-base percentage (.547).

Junior second baseman Karen Folts (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) is 19th in homeruns per game (0.32); sophomore pitcher Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) is 41st in winning percentage (.917); and freshman Sarah Scanlon (Mishawaka, IN/Mishawaka) ranks 15th in saves (two).

Alfred is in action this weekend for a pair of key Empire 8 Conference doubleheaders: Saturday, April 18, at 1 p.m. at home against RIT; and Sunday, April 29, at 1 p.m. at St. John Fisher.
