AU opens Empire 8 softball championships Friday morning
ITHACA, NY — The Empire 8 Conference has announced the schedule for next weekend’s softball championships. Third-seeded Alfred University (25-7, 7-5 Empire 8) opens the tournament with a 10 a.m. game Friday against second-seeded St. John Fisher (27-9, 9-3 Empire 8).
The double-elimination tournament, hosted by top-seeded Ithaca College, will be held Friday and Saturday, May 1 and 2, with Sunday, May 3, reserved as a rain date. The winner the tournament earns the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III championships.
In Friday’s other opening day game, Ithaca (23-14, 10-2 Empire 8) plays fourth-seeded RIT (18-16, 6-6 Empire 8) at noon. The losers of the AU-Fisher and Ithaca-RIT games will play at 2 p.m. Friday in Game 3, with the loser of that game eliminated. The winners of the AU-Fisher and Ithaca-RIT games will play at 4 p.m. Friday in Game 4.
On Saturday, the winner of Game 3 will play the loser of Game 4 at 11 a.m. (Game 5), with the loser of that game eliminated. The winners of Game 4 and Game 5 will play at 1 p.m. (Game 6), with Game 7 being played, if necessary, at 3 p.m. Please see the schedule on the AU softball team's website for a link to the Empire 8 Championships web page and tournament schedule.
AU is seeking its first-ever conference championship and NCAA tournament appearance. The Saxons wrapped up their Empire 8 schedule Friday with a doubleheader split of Ithaca. Alfred’s 6-0 win in the second game of that twinbill was the first-ever victory over the Bombers in the 16-year history of the AU program. Alfred split doubleheaders with Ithaca, Fisher and RIT this season.
The Saxons wrapped up their regular season Wednesday with a doubleheader split at Keuka. The win in the first game gave AU 25 for the year, which breaks the school single-season record.
