8/06/09

Jennifer Posener became assistant dean for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at AU, effective Monday, Aug. 3.

“Jennifer is passionate about her commitment to undergraduate student success,” said Dr. Mary McGee, dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, in announcing Posener’s appointment.

“She sees student advising as a key factor in the retention and success of many students. Jennifer will be a wonderful addition to our college and staff, bringing with her experience, energy, insights and ideas that will allow us to strengthen our support of students as well as faculty.”

“I am looking forward to working collaboratively with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences faculty to strengthen academic advising and support,” said Posener. “I plan to broaden my efforts with the First-Year Experience Steering Committee, and to further develop support mechanisms for all students, with particular attention to expanding our support networks for students in academic difficulty as well as for transfer students. In addition, I hope to advance communication and discussion around advising related topics.”

Posener came to Alfred University in March 2008 as director of retention in the Division of Enrollment Management, coordinating faculty and staff efforts to help students at-risk for dismissal or withdrawal.

She has previously collaborated with College of Liberal Arts & Sciences faculty, providing training for the First-Year Experience; co-sponsoring a workshop on faculty advising for students who are experiencing academic problems; responding to faculty alerts about students in jeopardy; and participating on the CLAS advising and scholastic standards committees.

Before coming to Alfred University, Posener was on the staff at St. John Fisher College in Rochester for 13 years, serving in various capacities including assistant director of the Higher Education Opportunity Program; academic advisor and coordinator of adult student services; and director of student services in the School of Adult and Graduate Education. She also served as a freshman advisor and taught in St. John Fisher’s first-year seminar program. Posener has experience working with international students, transfer students, and probationary students as well.

Posener received an undergraduate degree in political science and theater from the University of Buffalo and an M.S. degree in higher education from Syracuse University.
