ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University women’s tennis team opened up its 2009 season with a 9-0 shutout of visiting Pitt-Bradford Tuesday afternoon.

AU got singles wins from sophomore Griffin Currie (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep), 7-5, 6-0 in first singles; sophomore Sarah Foster (Adelaide, Australia/Sparta, NJ), 7-5, 7-5 in second singles; junior Autumn McLain (Oneida, NY/Oneida), 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 in third singles; senior Holly Seidewand (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas), 6-4, 6-0 in fourth singles; junior Kate Cohen (Bradford, PA/Bradford), 6-1, 6-0 in fifth singles; and sophomore Shannon Tovey (Chester, CT/Valley Regional), 6-0, 6-1 in sixth singles.

Currie and McLain won first doubles, 8-3; Seidewand and Foster took second doubles, 8-6; and freshmen Catherine Spencer (Homer, NY/Homer) and Brittany Bowen (Avoca, NY/Avoca) won third doubles, 8-1.

AU is in action next on Saturday, Sept. 5, at noon at Brockport.
