AU prepares to turn ‘Passionately Pink’ again!

Alfred University will host the second annual Passionately Pink for the Cure events on Friday, Oct. 30-Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009. The planned events will raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure to aid in breast cancer research.

This year, the Passionately Pink Committee — advised by Brenda Porter, director of Residence Life, and co-chaired by Jessica Marble, a junior marketing major from Wellsville, and Kevin Kostyk, junior political science major from New Jersey — has invited members of the campus and Alfred communities to all of the events.

On Friday the 30th, the event will kick off with a Passionately Pink Photo at King Alfred at 12:30 p.m. All are invited to wear pink and gather in the area for the second annual photo that portrays Alfred University’s support.

After the event, stop down to the Powell Campus Center and carve a free pink pumpkin, donated by Kent Farms in Andover. The best pink carving will be awarded a prize at the Passionately Pink Ball, which will take place from 6 p.m. to midnight in the Knight Club, Powell Campus Center.

At the Ball, two speakers from the Susan G. Komen Foundation, including Patty Gelman, who wrote “Humor After the Tumor,” and one alumna survivor will share their stories. Tickets are available for sale in the bookstore at $25 each or two for $40. The semi-formal ball will include a WALF-FM (AU radio station) DJ, art auction, and cash bar (ID required).

On Saturday, Oct. 31, the fun continues at the Alfred University Saxon Football game vs. University of Rochester at 1 p.m. The Pink Team is hosting a “pink out” and encouraging all fans to wear pink when cheering for the home team at the game. Prior to the game, at noon, tables of educational materials will be hosted by various Alfred University student organizations at the entrance to Merrill Field.

Pink t-shirts and sweatshirts for the event and other memorabilia can be purchased at the Alfred University bookstore during the month of October. For information on any of the events or for further details contact Porter at
