AU’s Secky, Manzer earn Empire 8 weekly football honors

ALFRED, NY — Alfred University’s Tom Secky (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) and Jared Manzer (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) have earned weekly honors from the Empire 8 Conference.

Secky, a sophomore quarterback, was named co-Offensive Player of the Week and Manzer, a senior wide receiver/free safety, was named Defensive Player of the Week. Both were honored for their play in Saturday’s regular season finale against visiting Utica, a 56-30 AU win that clinched a share of the Empire 8 title for AU and gave the Saxons the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III championship tournament.

Secky completed 16 of 26 passes for 369 yards and a school single-game record tying six touchdowns. His 369 yards passing were the second-most for a single game in school history, behind his record 387 yards in the 2008 season opener. He shares the weekly offensive honor with St. John Fisher tailback Brad Carlton.

Manzer had two interceptions against Utica, one that was returned 52 yards for a touchdown, to go with one solo tackle and a pass breakup. Manzer, who leads the team in interceptions with five, also earned Empire 8 weekly defensive honors after an Oct. 31 win over Rochester.

Alfred (8-1, 4-1 Empire 8) is the third-seeded team in the NCAA tournamant’s East Region and will host sixth-seeded Albright at noon Saturday, Nov. 21, at Merrill Field. Albright, a member of the Middle Atlantic Conference, finished the regular season with a 9-1 record (6-1 MAC).

The winner of the Alfred-Albright game will advance to the second round to take on the winner of Saturday’s game between second-seeded Delaware Valley and seventh-seeded Susquehanna.
Second-round games will be held at the home of the highest seeded teams. The other half of the East bracket has top-seeded Mount Union hosting eighth-seeded Washington & Jefferson and fourth-seeded Montclair State hosting fifth-seeded Maine Maritime; all first-round games are at noon.
