Saxons hang on to beat Keuka

ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University men’s basketball team saw a 20-point second-half lead disappear before bouncing back to defeat visiting Keuka College, 75-66, Tuesday evening in the McLane Center.

With the victory, the Saxons evened their record at 1-1 as they prepare to play in this weekend’s Dickinson College Tournament in Carlisle, PA.

Alfred led 58-38 with 8:10 left before Keuka (0-1) went on a 28-8 run over a five-minute span to knot the contest at 66-66 with 3:08 remaining. Alfred then went on a run of its own, scoring nine unanswered points over the final three minutes. The Saxons made seven of nine free throw attempts in the closing minutes while holding the visitors to 0-of-6 shooting.

Senior forward Jared Patt (Nelson, PA/Elkland) tallied a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds and senior guard Bobby Barry (Duanesburg, NY/Duanesburg) scored 21 points on eight-of-11 shooting to pace the Saxons. Junior guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) scored 15 points and dished out four assists and junior guard Gary Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) added 13 points, three assists and six boards.

Calvin Logins scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds and Diamond Booker added 11 points and 19 rebounds to lead Keuka. Alex Coleman chipped in with 16 points, five rebounds and four steals.

Alfred plays Penn State-York at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, in the first round of the Dickinson College Tournament.
