Saxons defeat Penn State York, 81-54, at Dickinson College Tournament

CARLISLE, PA — The Alfred University men’s basketball team defeated Penn State York in the first round at the Dickinson College Tournament, 81-54, Friday evening.

Alfred (2-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead when junior guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) netted a three-pointer on the Saxons’ first possession. AU kept the lead for the entire game. The Saxons shot 39.5 percent behind the arc and 42.7 percent in field goals.

Stopera scored a game-high 23 points, made one assist and brought down three rebounds. Junior guard Gary Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) dished out a game-high six assists and scored five points for Alfred. Senior forward Jared Patt (Nelson, PA/Elkland) netted 12 points and grabbed three rebounds and senior forward Ron Smith (Lyons, NY/Lyons) added four points, a game-high six rebounds and made two blocks. Also scoring for the Saxons was freshman guard Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) with nine points.

Penn State York (0-3) shot 38.8 percent in field goals. Eddie Ward scored a team-high 10 points and pulled down five rebounds. Chase McGowan and Erik Aspril each netted nine points.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the tournament championship against Hobart.
