Houghton edges Lady Saxons

HOUGHTON, NY — The Alfred University women’s basketball team dropped a 55-53 decision at Houghton College Tuesday evening.

Houghton (5-0) shot 52 percent in the first half to 39 percent for AU and the host Highlanders held a 31-24 halftime advantage. Alfred (4-1, 0-0 Empire 8) shot 37 percent from the floor for the game and was outrebounded, 37-27, as the Saxons lost their first game of the season. Alfred had 22 turnovers and Houghton had 19.

Junior point guard Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) scored a team-high 17 points and handed out three assists for Alfred. Senior forward Libby Meier (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) added 12 points and six rebounds and sophomore point guard Kacey Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) dished out a team-best five assists.

Houghton’s Ashley Dupler had a double-double with game-highs in points (20) and rebounds (14). Leah French added 11 points and six assists for the Highlanders.

Alfred plays next on Saturday, Nov. 28, at 2 p.m. at Hilbert.
