Saxons top Hilbert, 65-59

HAMBURG, NY – The Alfred University men’s basketball team won a close 65-59 decision at Hilbert College Saturday afternoon.

Alfred trailed the host Hawks, 25-24 at the half. The Saxons scored the first six points after intermission to go up 30-25 and never trailed again. Hilbert tied the game at 55-55 with 2:21 left, but Alfred went on another 6-0 run to take a 61-55 advantage with just under a minute remaining.

Junior point guard Gary Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) nearly tallied a triple-double ( 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists) to pace Alfred (4-2). Senior forward Jared Patt (Nelson, PA/Elkland) had 10 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals, and sophomore center Bryan Bobo (Ontario Center, NY/Wayne) scored a career-high 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds.

Chris Parrott scored a game-high 19 points, grabbed eight boards and dished out five assists to lead Hilbert (1-4). Cleveland Darren added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Alfred is in action next on Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 8 p.m. at Cazenovia. The Saxons open their Empire 8 Conference slate with a home date against Stevens on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 4 p.m.
