AU women’s basketball team drops conference opener to visiting Stevens

ALFRED, NY – Brittany Fuller had 22 points and seven rebounds to lead the visiting Stevens Institute of Technology women’s basketball team to an 80-52 win over Alfred University Saturday afternoon in the Empire 8 Conference opener for both teams.

Stevens (3-4, 1-0 Empire 8) led 39-16 at the half as the visitors outshot AU, 44percent to 22 percent and outrebounded the Saxons, 25-14. The Ducks made five of 10 three-point attempts in the first half while AU (5-2, 0-1 Empire 8) connected on only one of eight from long range. For the game, Stevens outshot Alfred 52 percent to 29 percent and outrebounded AU 45-33.

Junior forward Autumn McLain (Oneida, NY/Oneida) led Alfred with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Junior point guard Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) had 11 points and senior forward Alysha Dias (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) had nine points and four rebounds.

Dawn Garcia had 15 points and Sarah Gehring (six boards) and Jill Barrett (nine rebounds) each netted 11 for Stevens, who finished shooting 50 percent (seven of 14) on three-pointers.

Alfred is in action next on Dec. 29 at 5 p.m. against Mount Union in the Waynesburg (PA) Classic.
