ECAC names four Saxons Northwest all-stars, Manzer is Player of the Year
ALFRED, NY — The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) named Alfred University senior wide receiver/free safety Jared Manzer (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) its Division III Northwest Player of the Year. Manzer was among four AU football players on the ECAC Northwest all-star squad.
Also named Northwest all-stars from Alfred were senior tailback Vinson Hendrix (Rochester, NY/East), sophomore quarterback Tom Secky (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) and sophomore linebacker Nick Clark (Canisteo, NY/Canisteo-Greenwood).
The 2009 Empire 8 Conference Player of the Year and an American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-American, Manzer caught 65 passes for 1,046 yards and a school single-season record 15 touchdowns. As a free safety, he had five interceptions and on special teams he averaged 20.5 yards on kick returns and 10.4 yards on punt returns. His 195 all-purpose yards per game ranks second in the nation. Manzer won First Team Empire 8 honors as a receiver, defensive back and all-purpose runner and Second Team honors as a return man. He will leave Alfred holding single-season and career records for receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches.
Hendrix rushed 251 times for 1,339 yards and 11 touchdowns and averaged 5.3 yards per carry and 133.9 yards per game (ninth in the country). He also caught 17 passes for 170 yards and a pair of scores. A First Team Empire 8 all-star this season, Hendrix will leave Alfred ranked second in career rushing yards (3,534) and career rushing touchdowns (36). His 1,406 yards rushing in 2007 is the school’s single-season record. He also shares the school single-season mark for 100-yard rushing games (eight, in 2007 and again this season).
Secky, the Empire 8 Rookie of the Year as a freshman in 2008, was a First Team conference all-star this season. He completed 147 of 231 passes for 1,941 yards with 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. His 161.84 passer rating ranks 10th in the nation and is the second highest ever for a single-season at Alfred, as is his 64.6 percent completion percentage this year. After two seasons at AU, Secky has thrown for 4,810 yards and 53 touchdowns. He owns the school’s single-season record for passing yards (387, set in 2008) and shares the record for touchdown passes in a game (six, against Utica this year).
Clark is a two-time Empire 8 all-star, earning Second Team honors as a freshman and First Team honors this year. He finished the 2009 season with a team-leading 76 tackles (including 7.5 for loss and 1.5 sacks), one interception, three pass breakups and a forced fumble. The Saxons’ short-yardage back, he rushed 10 times for 23 yards and four touchdowns.
The 2009 Saxons earned the school’s first-ever Empire 8 Conference title and its first NCAA playoff appearance in 28 years. Alfred went 8-2 (4-1 Empire 8) and lost to Albright, 35-25, in the first round of the NCAA Division III championship tournament.
