Saxons lose at Hartwick, 78-61
ONEONTA, NY -- Hartwick College defeated the visiting Alfred University men's basketball team, 78-61, Friday night.
Hartwick (5-8, 2-3 Empire 8) held a 45-27 lead at intermission, courtesy of 63-percent shooting in the first half. Alfred (6-5, 0-3 Empire 8) shot well, making 42 percent of its shots (41 percent on three pointers). The Hawks, however, connected on 61 percent of their shots, including 46 percent from three-point range.
Junior point guard Gary Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) and freshman guard Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) each scored 15 points to lead Alfred. Curran's career high came on five three-point shots in seven attempts. Kwiecien also had three rebounds, four assists and three steals. Freshman forward Phil Mormon (Fairport, NY/Fairport) scored 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds, and senior guard Ron Smith (Lyons, NY/Lyons) had 10 points and seven boards.
Mark Blazek scored a game-high 28 points with three rebounds and six assists to pace Hartwick. Chris Ryder had 16 points and 11 boards and Kyle Phillips scored 17.
Alfred is in action next on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 8 p.m. at Elmira.
