Saxons fall to Nazareth, 72-62

PITTSFORD, NY — The Alfred University men’s basketball team was defeated by Nazareth, 72-62, Friday night in an Empire 8 Conference game.

Alfred (7-10, 1-8 Empire 8) trailed Nazareth, 31-27, at the end of the first half. The Saxons were able to close the gap to within one point, but were unable to take the lead. For the game, AU shot 36 percent and Nazareth (13-6, 8-2 Empire 8) shot 50 percent.

Junior guard Gary Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) scored a team-high 17 points and junior guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) netted 13 points and had three assists to lead Alfred. Freshman guard Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) added 10 points and senior forward Jared Patt (Nelson, PA/Elkland Area) chipped in with nine points and brought down a team-high seven rebounds.

Tyshun Stephens scored a game-high 18 points and Corey McAdam netted 16 points and had a game-high eight assists to pace Nazareth. Greg Lothridge added 16 points and Phil Scaffidi chipped in with 12 points.

Alfred is in action next on Jan. 31, at 4 p.m. vs. Hartwick.
