Ithaca defeats AU swimming and diving teams
ITHACA, NY – Host Ithaca College swept the Alfred University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams in a dual meet Saturday afternoon.
The Ithaca men beat AU 130-113 to snap a 23-meet winning streak for Alfred in dual meets against Empire 8 opponents. The Saxons’ last loss in an Empire 8 dual meet came in February 2006 at Hartwick. Ithaca’s women defeated Alfred, 179-56.
Freshman Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell) won two events for Alfred (6-2, 3-1 Empire 8), taking the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:26.91) and 500 freestyle (4:57.16). Other Saxons earning wins were: senior Andrew Brisson (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) in the 200-yard free (1:46.24); senior Kameron Chambliss (Alfred Station, NY/Alfred-Almond) in three-meter diving (301.80 points); junior Tyler Olsen (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga) in the 100-yard free (48.38 seconds); junior Zach Mix (Mt. Morris, NY/Mt. Morris) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.61); and sophomore Warren Dolben (Rye, NH/Berwick Academy) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.73).
Chambliss took second in one-meter diving (253.10); Brisson was second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:59.65); and Olsen was second in the 200 free (1:48.08). Other top performers for the Saxons were: junior Matt Lobban (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon), second in the 1,000 free (10:30.61) and third in the 500 free (5:02.95); senior Greg Pilgrim (Almond, NY/Alfred-Almond), second in the 200 fly (2:02.91); and sophomore Andrew Moragne (Cleveland, OH/University), third in the 50 free (22.25) and 100 free (50.16).
Sophomore Richard Guarniero (New York Mills, NY/Thomas R. Proctor), Dolben, Pilgrim and junior Dan Steere (Hornell, NY/Alfred-Almond) took second in the 400-yard medley relay (3:42.47) and Moragne, Chapman, Steere and Brisson were second in the 400 free relay (3:18.03).
Junior Sarah Blair (Auburn, NY/Auburn) was the AU women’s lone winner, taking the 50-yard freestyle in 25.11 seconds. She also placed second in the 100 free (55.95).
Other top performers for the Alfred (2-7, 1-3 Empire 8) women were: sophomore Donna Hoops (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo), third in the 100 backstroke (1:07.93); freshman Eryn Matich (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City), third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:24.41) and fourth in the 100-yard fly (1:05.73); junior Calista Merritt (Conesus, NY/Livonia), fourth in the 1,000 free (11:55.42); freshman Shelby Remington (Gainesville, NY/Letchworth), fourth in the 200 free (2:11.99) and the 500 free (5:47.99); freshman Kylie Smith (Abington, PA/Abington), fourth in one-meter diving (186.60) and three-meter diving (2:01.75); freshman Katie Ganley (Syracuse, NY/Westhill), fourth in the 100 back (1:12.04); and sophomore Julie Slattery (Binghamton, NY/Seton Catholic), fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.74).
Alfred has its final dual meet of the season next Saturday, Feb. 5, at 1 p.m. when the men’s and women’s team compete at Hartwick.
