Saxons edge Hartwick, 69-67

ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University men’s basketball team defeated Hartwick, 69-67, Sunday evening in an Empire 8 matchup.

Alfred (8-10, 2-8 Empire 8) was tied with Hartwick, 26-26, at the end of the first half. For the game, AU shot 39 percent and Hartwick shot 55 percent.

Junior guard Mike Stopera (Scotia,NY/Scotia-Glenville) scored a game-high 25 points to pace the Saxons. Stopera scored the Saxons’ final seven points, making five of six free throws in the final 30 seconds of the game.

Senior forward Jared Patt (Nelson, PA/Elkland Area) netted 12 points and freshman guard Matt Johnson (Winchester, VA/James Wood) added 11 points. Freshman guard Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) chipped in with seven points.

Chris Ryder scored a team-high 19 points and Mark Blazek netted 16 points to lead Hartwick (8-11, 5-6 Empire 8). Kyle Phillips added 11 points and James Mantas chipped in with eight points and had five assists.

Alfred is in action next on Feb. 2, at 7 p.m. at home against Penn State-Wilkes Barre.
