AU men’s swimming and diving beats Hartwick, Lady Saxons fall
The Saxons ended their regular season with a 7-2 record in dual meets (4-1 Empire 8). Senior Andrew Brisson (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) paced the Alfred men with three individual wins: in the 100-yard backstroke (54.16 seconds), 50-yard freestyle (21.86), and 200-yard back (2:01.66). The Alfred women (2-8, 1-4 Empire 8) got two wins from freshman Kylie Smith (Abington, PA/Abington), who won 1-meter diving (182.30 points) and 3-meter diving (179.15).
The Saxon men and women now begin preparations for their respective state championship meets. The women compete Feb. 17-20 at the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association championships at Nottingham High School in Syracuse. The men compete at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) championships Feb. 25-28, also at Nottingham High. The AU men are three-time defending UNYSCSA champs.
Also earning wins for the Alfred men against Hartwick were: freshman Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell) in the 1,000-yard free (10:27.12); junior Tyler Olsen (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga) in the 100 free (49.41) and 500 free (5:01.60); sophomore Warren Dolben (Rye, NH/Berwick Academy) in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.24); senior Greg Pilgrim (Almond, NY/Alfred-Almond) in the 100 butterfly (54.37); and senior Kameron Chambliss (Alfred Station, NY/Alfred-Almond) in 1-meter diving (251.60). The team of sophomore Andrew Moragne (Cleveland, OH/University), junior Dan Steere (Hornell, NY/Alfred-Almond), Olsen and Brisson won the 200 freestyle relay (1:29.09).
Other top performers for the Alfred men were: junior Matt Lobban (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon), second in the 1,000 free (10:27.12) and 500 free (5:03.35); junior Zach Mix (Mt. Morris, NY/Mt. Morris), second in the 100 fly (55.10) and 200 individual medley (2:08.31) and third in the 200 fly (2:03.41); and sophomore Jeff Swartout (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley), second in the 200 breast (2:27.86). Olsen took second in the 200 free (1:47.81); Dolben was second in the 100 breast (1:02.15) and third in the 200 IM (2:09.35); Pilgrim was second in the 200 fly (2:03.35); Chambliss was second in 3-meter diving (233.70); and Moragne was third in the 50 free (22.57), the 100 free (50.30) and 100 fly (55.77). The team of sophomore Richard Guarniero (New York Mills, NY/Thomas R. Proctor), Dolben, Pilgrim and Mix took second in the 200 medley relay (1:40.84).
Smith was the only event winner for the Alfred women. Other top performers were junior Sarah Blair (Auburn, NY/Auburn), second in the 50 free (25.73) and third in the 200 free (2:09.22) and 100 free (57.60); freshman Katie Ganley (Syracuse, NY/Westhill), third in the 200 breast (2:47.69) and fourth in the 100 breast (1:19.05); freshman Eryn Matich (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City), second in the 200 fly (2:30.16) and 100 fly (1:06.59); and junior Cailin Asmo (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City), fourth in the 200 fly (2:39.37).
The team of freshmen Julie Dzikowski (Dansville, NY/Dansville) and Nicole Ramos (Freeville, NY/Dryden), junior Calista Merritt (Conesus, NY/Livonia) and Asmo took third in the 200 free relay (1:56.47).
