Men's track and field team finishes sixth, women eighth at state meet 2/27/10
The AU men finished sixth in the team standings in the two-day meet, and the Alfred women were eighth. Junior Shawn Ross (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga) placed first in the shot put (14.15 meters), giving the AU men their only title at the championships. Sophomore Richard Scott (Eden, NY/Eden) had a solid meet for the Saxons, placing fourth in the 400-meter dash, in a school-record 50.39 seconds, and sixth in the 200-meter dash (23.14 seconds). The AU men finished the meet with 48 points; team champion RPI had 159. Scott, running the anchor, also teamed with senior Lee Consolo (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville), senior Matt Phillips (Kinderhook, NY/Ichabod Crane), and freshman Jeremy Weaver (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) to finish third in the 4X400-meter relay. Their time of 3:25.22 is a new school record. Other top performers for the Alfred men were: freshman Mike Raplee (Dundee, NY/Dundee), fifth in the shot put (13.12 meters); Consolo and Phillips, sixth (1:07.92) and eighth (1:08.23), respectively, in the 500-meter run; and freshman Derek Denkenberger (Elmira, NY/Horseheads), sophomore Ken Noll (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane), senior Jesse Schuster (Tonawanda, NY/Tonawanda), and sophomore Ben Pelto (Jefferson, MA/West Boylston), seventh in the 4X800-meter relay (8:32.46). Senior Rachel Gaylord (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) took seventh in the 1,000-meter run (3:14.20) to lead the AU women. Junior Melissa Haahr (Owego, NY/Tioga), freshman Amy Morrissey (Hornell, NY/Hornell), Gaylord, and senior Megan Crimmins (Big Flats, NY/Horseheads) were seventh in the 4X800-meter relay (10:29.09). Alfred’s women finished the meet with 15 points; team champ Ithaca had 271. Other top performers for the Alfred women were: freshman Kelly-Jo Beck (York, NY/York), 13th in the shot put (9.42 meters); Crimmins, 16th in the mile (5:35.95); sophomore Anne Mills (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough), 12th in the 55-meter hurdles (9.35 seconds); Morrissey, 13th in the 500-meter run (1:25.34); and Haahr, 10th in the 1,000-meter run (3:19.27). The AU women set a school record in the distance medley relay on Friday. AU is in action next on Friday and Saturday, March 5 and 6, at the ECAC indoor championships at Smith College in Northampton, MA. |
