AU women’s lacrosse team drops season opener 3/13/10
Allegheny (1-1) took a 3-0 lead less than four minutes into the game, but Alfred responded with three straight goals – one by freshman midfielder Ali Garcia (Salt Lake City, UT/Judge Memorial) and two by junior attack Michelle Adams (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) -- to make it 3-3 with 5:48 left in the first half. T The host Gators closed the half with three unanswered to take a 6-3 halftime lead and led 11-5 midway through the second. After Alfred cut its deficit to four goals with a pair of scores, Allegheny netted two more to take a 13-7 lead with 5:41 left in regulation. The Saxons tallied four straight goals, the final by freshman midfielder Devin Fitzgerald (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) with 11 seconds left, to close out the game’s scoring. Adams finished with a game-high six goals for the Saxons. Junior midfielder Elyse Caldwell (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) had two goals and an assist and senior attack Emily Tobin (Penfield, NY/Penfield) had a goal and two assists. Garcia and Fitzgerald each had a goal and an assist; senior attack Abbey Schaffnit (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) had two assists, and freshman midfielder Tracie McGinnity (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) had one assist. Meg Grossman had four goals and Kia Voyer-Colbat three goals and two assists to lead Allegheny. Junior Kate Baughman (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) made nine saves in goal for Alfred, while Allegheny netminder Rebecca O’Shurak stopped five shots. Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, March 17, at 5:30 p.m. at home against Keuka. |
