3/21/10

ALFRED, NY – Junior attacker Michelle Adams (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) scored her 100th career goal as the Alfred University women’s lacrosse team defeated visiting SUNY Maritime, 19-4, Sunday afternoon at Merrill Field.

Adams scored her milestone goal with 20:26 left in the second half, off an assist from freshman midfielder Devin Fitzgerald (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia). It came a day after Adams earned her 100th career point during Saturday’s victory over visiting Medaille.

AU junior goalie Kate Baughman (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) turned in her third straight solid performance in as many games (all AU wins), stopping six Maritime shots.

AU led 10-2 at the half as the Saxons (3-1) outshot Maritime 26-7 in the game’s first 30 minutes. Alfred scored the game’s first six goals — two by Adams and two by junior attacker Elyse Caldwell (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell). After Maritime’s Kristen Saporito scored 9:35 into the game to make it 6-1, AU freshman midfielder Ali Garcia (Salt Lake City, UT/Judge Memorial) scored three straight to give Alfred a 9-1 lead.

The Saxons scored the first five goals of the second half to put the contest out of reach. For the game, Alfred outshot the visitors, 41-13, and held a 28-16 advantage in groundballs. Maritime also had 27 turnovers, to 17 for Alfred.

Adams finished with four goals and an assist, while Garcia and Caldwell had four and three goals, respectively. Senior attacker Emily Tobin (Penfield, NY/Penfield) had a goal and four assists. Senior attacker Abbey Schaffnit (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) and freshman midfielder Tracie McGinnity (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) each had two goals and an assist, with McGinnity adding a game-high six groundballs.

Baughman has made 19 saves in the last three games, while allowing nine goals.

Alfred is in action next on Friday, April 2, at 11 a.m., when the Saxons play their Empire 8 Conference opener at Stevens.
