Alfred University women’s lacrosse team knocks off Wells
AU trailed by a goal three times early in the opening half before scoring three unanswered in just under two minutes to take a 5-3 lead 8:47 into the frame. Wells twice drew within a goal — the last time at 6-5 midway through the half — but Alfred netted the seven of the next eight goals to take a 13-6 lead at the half.
AU scored the first three goals of the second half to take a 16-6 lead with 24:26 left and Wells would get no closer than nine the rest of the way. Alfred, which outshot Wells 33-23 and held a 42-25 advantage in groundballs, improves to 5-2 on the year with the non-conference win.
Junior attack Michelle Adams (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) had a game-high four goals and senior attack Emily Tobin (Penfield, NY/Penfield) had a game-high six points on two goals and four assists to pace the Saxons. Junior attack Elyse Caldwell (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) and freshman midfielder Tracie McGinnity (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) (six groundballs) each had three goals and senior attack Abbey Schaffnit (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) had two goals and three assists to go with seven groundballs. Senior midfielder Amanda Sullivan (Lexington, MA/Lexington) had a goal and picked up a game-high eight groundballs.
Emily Lotkowictz had three goals, three groundballs and five draw controls to lead Wells (4-5). Stefanie Miller also scored three goals and Madeline Bass netted two.
Junior Kate Baughman (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) made eight saves in goal for Alfred, while Wells netminder Elizabeth Barkley stopped seven shots.
Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, April 7, at 4 p.m. at home against Elmira.
