St. John Fisher tops AU men’s lacrosse, 9-5

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team was defeated by St. John Fisher, 9-5, Saturday afternoon.

Alfred (3-9, 0-6 Empire 8) trailed 5-1 at the half. In the third period the Saxons scored four goals to Fisher’s one to close the gap to within one goal (6-5). The Cardinals held the Saxons to a scoreless fourth period and scored three of their own. For the game, Fisher outshot AU, 26-24, and AU picked up 27 groundballs to Fisher’s 26.

Junior attack Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) scored a game-high three goals and picked up three groundballs to lead the Saxons. Freshman attack Scott Johnston (Akron, NY/Akron) and sophomore midfielder Jay Whyel (Markleysburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) each scored one goal. Senior attack Mike Russo (Mattydale, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) had a game-high two assists and junior midfielder Dustin Jacobson (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse (Onondaga CC)) picked up a team-high four groundballs.

Ryan Schmidt scored a game-high three goals to pace the Cardinals (12-1, 5-1 Empire 8). Connor Henderson (two assists) and Jeff Price each scored two goals and Chris Schmidt and Eric Klein both scored one goal. Erich Rassow picked up a game-high five groundballs.

Freshman goalie Tim Doyle (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) had nine saves in goal for Alfred and Jon Cortina had five saves in goal for Fisher.

Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, April 28, at 4 p.m. vs. Ithaca.
