4/27/10

HORNELL, NY – The Alfred University softball team stretched its winning streak to 13 games with a non-conference doubleheader sweep of visiting Fredonia Tuesday afternoon at Hornell High School. The Saxons won both games in five innings — 12-4 and 8-0 — to improve to 26-4 on the season.

In the opener, the Saxons broke a 2-2 tie with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. After Fredonia (14-16) answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to make it 9-4, Alfred got three in the bottom of the inning, the last two on a walk-off two-run homerun from sophomore designated hitter Shanna Ewoldt (Tuscon, AZ/Waubansie Valley) with two outs.

Sophomore pitcher Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) improved to 13-3 with the complete-game win, allowing two earned runs on five hits and striking out four. She was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Ewoldt finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs to go with two stolen bases and sophomore third baseman Molly Shepherd (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) was 3-for-4 with a homerun, three RBIs and three runs. Senior third baseman Jesika LeBarron (Campbell, NY/Corning West) scored a run and drove in two.

In the second game, junior pitcher Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) tossed her fifth shutout of the season to improve to 13-1. She struck out four while allowing only one hit, a leadoff single in the top of the fifth.

Freshman catcher Emily Fenton (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford) went 2-for-2 with a double and scored twice and senior centerfielder Shannon Mather (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two driven in. Freshman second baseman Kassandra Corsi (Willoughby, OH/Willoughby South) had an RBI double and scored twice, and Hedrick and Ewoldt each drove in a run and stole two bases.

The AU players and coaches wore special pink jerseys as part of their effort to raise breast cancer awareness.

Alfred is back in action Wednesday, April 28, at 3 p.m. for an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader against visiting Elmira. AU (7-1 Empire 8) wraps up its regular season with a pair of conference doubleheaders this weekend at home: Saturday, May 1 at 1 p.m. against Stevens and Sunday, May 2, at 1 p.m. against St. John Fisher.
