  • Umoja, study and support of African culture and lifestyles
  • Poder Latino, study and support of Latino culture and lifestyles
  • Shades, support group for women of all colors
  • Caribbean Student Association
  • Alfred Steppas, dance team
  • Pacific Rim, Asian support
  • Students Acting For Equality, anti-discrimination committee

The following programs are offered and supported by ALANA affairs:

Heritage Month Celebrations
Both Umoja and Poder Latino sponsor Heritage Month celebrations to promote their culture and traditions. Umoja produces African Heritage Month every February and Poder Latino produces Latino Heritage Month from September 15th through October 15th. These celebrations feature dinners, movies, performing arts and guest speakers. The goal of these programs is educate all Alfred University students about different cultures and allow ethnic minority students to celebrate and display their own culture.

Conferences and Retreats
The students involved with the office of ALANA Affairs interact with other schools through conferences and retreats. ALANA has been an active participant at the Oswego Diversity Conference each fall. Many ALANA groups also help present at AU's new annual H/EOP Leadership Conference.

Kwanzaa Celebration
Umoja throws a magnificent dinner each year in celebration of Kwanzaa. The food is delicious and each year a different guest speaker addresses various aspects of this heritage celebration.

Social Outings
Films, bowling, shopping trips and roller-skating are just some of the popular trips ALANA Affairs sponsors for our students. Many student groups also enjoy visiting other campuses and participating in their dances and other events.

Visiting Performers
ALANA Affairs and the ALANA clubs bring many individuals and groups to campus to entertain and educate. Including numerous comedians, bands, and speakers. Highlights have included performances by the Roots, Kardinall Offishall, and Sal Soul Comedy Troupe.

Student-Created Events
We believe the key to an active social life is creating the events that you want to see. ALANA students are extremely creative in producing their own events. Events produced by the students include dances such as the HALLOWEEN JAM and PAJAMA JAM, charitable events such as THE PODER AUCTION and CSA FASHION SHOW, and educational programs such as "Raices", a Latin heritage stage show.
