Health and Wellness Education Program

Goal

The goal of Health and Wellness Programming is to give Alfred University students the opportunity to access relevant health knowledge, expand their health skills, and become competent in caring for the multidimensional aspects of their health as they develop. Through campus-wide programming the Health and Wellness program provides students with learning and leadership opportunities that strengthen their connection to the Alfred University community.

Services

To accomplish it’s goal the Health and Wellness Program provides the following:
• Resources for personal and professional use
• Campus health education programming in support of healthy lifestyles
• Promote and provide student activities that do not involve alcohol
• Train and advise student peer educators and student athlete mentors (SAMS)
• Educational programming for violators of University alcohol and drug policies
• Health and Wellness programs on a variety of topics for classes and residence halls

Peer Education

Peer educators go through a formal application, selection, & training process to prepare them for a variety of challenges such as presenting programs, planning activities, raising awareness, and helping other students. At this time peer education consists of two separate groups, Health and Wellness Peer Educators and SAMS (Student Athlete Mentors).

Health and Wellness Peer Educators are Alfred University students trained to provide information and assist their peers in developing health skills that will enhance student wellness in a wide range of areas relevant to students. They offer education, leadership, and mentorship to peers.

SAMS (Student Athlete Mentors) are Alfred University student-athletes that like Health and Wellness Peer Educators offer education, leadership, and mentorship to their teammates and peers. SAMS differ from Health and Wellness Peer Educators in their focus: the knowledge and skills needed to help students avoid the dangers of alcohol and other drug use.
