for High School Students

July 5-24, 2010
Each summer we welcome high school and pre-high-school students from all over the world to our beautiful campus to participate in exciting summer programs. With Alfred University's excellence in teaching and commitment to offering quality programming, these are among the most educational and fun collegiate summer programs in the country, and they are highly rated by the students who attend them, as well as their parents.
Our 3-week ESL Summer Program provides top quality English instruction in a supportive environment, along with enjoyable activities, cultural excursions, safe and pleasant surroundings, comfortable housing and nutritious meals. We have endeavored to combine just the right amount of learning and fun to make each week a memorable experience for all.
Ideal Location
Our campus is located in Alfred, New York, a safe, peaceful village in western New York State, where summer days are warm and nights are cool and comfortable. Surrounded by rolling hills and beautiful meadows and valleys, Alfred University is the perfect place for students to spend time learning and having fun.
Program Dates
The program will take place July 5-24, 2010. (Students are expected to arrive on Monday, July 5 and depart campus on Saturday, July 24.)
Who Can Attend?
This program is for students aged 14-18, who have already received several years of English instruction and have a good basic knowledge of the language. The program is designed to accommodate up to 30 students.
Schedule
Classes: Our program offers intensive training in speaking, pronunciation, listening comprehension, reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary expansion. The typical weekday schedule includes 3.5 hours of intensive English instruction in the morning (for a total of 47 hours of classroom instruction overall). In the afternoon and evening, students continue to practice their English by taking part in leisure activities on our 232-acre campus and by participating in off-campus trips.
Afternoon Activities: After a morning spent in class, we realize students wish to enjoy spending time in the afternoon having fun. The afternoon activity program is designed to accommodate many interests. Students choose the type of activity they would like to engage in each week. The afternoon program features sports, art, performing arts and equestrian opportunities. One afternoon is devoted to a half-day excursion to the Genesee Valley Country Museum.
Evenings: Evenings are filled with enjoyable social activities such as indoor and outdoor games, movies, visits to a local lake or park for picnics, campfires and hayrides, visits to local cultural events such as a hot air balloon rally and the county fair, campus scavenger hunt, visits to the Terra Cotta Coffee House for snacks and games, parties, stargazing, karaoke, bowling, a campus talent show, a visit to a local working farm and more.
Weekend Activities: Saturdays are devoted to day-long, supervised excursions to Niagara Falls and Darien Lake Theme Park, with a professional tour guide. On Sundays the students are given free time in the morning to relax, do laundry and attend religious services, if desired. In the afternoon and evening there are more opportunities for activities with our staff.
Faculty and Staff
The program is staffed by distinguished members of the Alfred University faculty and staff. Morning classes are taught by experienced English-As-A-Second-Language faculty. Afternoon activities are organized and taught by University instructors who specialize in the areas of art, performing arts, sports and equestrian studies. Other leisure and social activities are supervised by our dedicated activity and sports staff. Our summer Medical Director provides basic health care for our students and supervises our Medical Center.
Housing & Supervision
Summer students are housed in clean, comfortable University residence halls, two in each room, with boys in one hall and girls in another. International students are housed in the same halls as American high school students, to provide additional opportunities to practice conversing in English. Out-of-class supervision is provided by our team of Resident Directors and Resident Assistants, who are specially trained to assist the students, enforce University rules and policies and, also, to serve as camp counselors, mentors, positive role models and friends. Each residence hall has laundry facilities that are available free-of-charge to our summer guests.
Meals
Three meals will be provided each day in the University’s Powell Dining Hall (with the exception of two or three meals that may be provided in alternate locations when students are away from campus on excursions). Our dining services staff work very closely with us to accommodate the nutritional needs of our students. They can provide meals for students with food allergies, medical, cultural or religious restrictions, and lifestyle preferences such as vegetarian, vegan, ova-lactarian, etc.
Program Cost
The program fee of $2,995* per person includes tuition, housing, meals, afternoon, evening and weekend activities, program materials, supervision, local trips, excursions, transportation to and from the Rochester International Airport and a certificate of completion.
