Program
This camp provides a wonderful opportunity for high school students to learn more about renewable energy. The emphasis is on having fun and enjoying our beautiful natural surroundings while learning.
Each day will begin with a presentation on different aspects of renewable energy, and the rest of the day will be spent putting into practice the concepts learned. Students, working in teams, will design, build, debug, and test a small wind turbine and a small PV-powered car. Students will implement their own designs from rough sketch to prototype, rather than assembling a kit. The main components, material and tools will all be supplied.
Class topics will include:- Energy in General
- Physics of Energy
- Forms of Renewable Energy (particularly wind and solar)
- Economics of Energy
- Social and Environmental Factors
The camp will also include a supervised field trip to a full scale hardware store, where students can pick up any additional items they need for their projects (with funds provided by the camp). This will help the students become familiar with standards and options when it comes to the use of components.
The exciting culmination of the camp will take place on the last day when the student teams use their projects in a competition. With our dynamic, engaging and caring faculty and staff; terrific facilities; and lovely surroundings, the AU Renewable Engineering Camp could make this your best summer ever!
Who Can Attend?
This camp is open to students entering grades 10, 11 or 12 who are interested in science and math and wish to learn about renewable energy engineering. The number of participants is kept small to allow for individualized attention and optimal use of equipment.
Schedule
Students must arrive between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. on Sunday for registration and will leave after lunch on Thursday. Students attend classes during the day and enjoy recreational activities in the evening. View sample schedule.

Faculty
Dr. Jalal Baghdadchi, AU Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering, serves as camp director and primary instructor. Instruction assistance is also provided by advanced AU graduate students. Questions regarding camp academic content may be directed to Dr. Baghdadchi at email.
Supervision
When not in class, campers are supervised by our wonderful Resident Directors (RDs) and Resident Assistants (RAs), who are specially trained to serve as camp counselors, positive role models, mentors and friends. In order to ensure everyone has a safe, healthy and enjoyable time on campus, summer students are expected to abide by the University's summer programs rules & regulations.
Housing and Meals
Students stay in secure University residence halls dedicated to summer campers (2 per room) and must bring their own pillows, blankets and bed/bath linens for the week (bed linens must fit the extra-long twin residence hall beds). Males and females are housed in separate halls. Resident Directors and Resident Assistants will be on-site in the residence halls at all times. Laundry facilities are available in each hall at no charge.
Delicious, all-you-can-eat, cafeteria-style meals are served in the campus dining hall. Our Dining Services chefs do an excellent job in accommodating campers with food allergies and other special requirements.
Tuition, Room and Board
The program fee is $850 (includes a non-refundable $100 deposit). This covers tuition, supervision, program materials & equipment, recreational activities, room and board from dinner on the first day through lunch on the last day.
The $100 deposit must be submitted with the application. Payment can be made by check* or credit card. Full payment of the balance is due May 24, 2013.
(Commuter Rate: Students living locally who wish to attend this camp as commuters may do so. The commuter rate, which covers tuition, supervision, program materials & equipment and lunch, is $595. Evening recreational activities are not included. Students who wish to commute must check in at registration on Sunday and arrive on campus by 9:00 a.m. for classes Monday-Thursday. They must be picked up no later than 5:00 p.m. each day, except Thursday, when pick-up time is 1:00 p.m. Please be sure to check the "Commuter" box on the application form.)
*There will be a $30 charge for checks returned for insufficient funds.
