Services and Programs

Women of Influence: This program brings powerful female role models to campus, providing opportunities for inspiration and guidance through lectures and small group discussions. Past speakers have included a New York State Supreme Court Judge, a dean of a medical college, a New York State Senator, and a lobbyist from Albany. Visit our Events page for a list of upcoming speakers.

Skill-Building Workshops: Most of us aren't born leaders. It is a learning process! These workshops provide effective training on topics such as meeting management, public speaking, conflict resolution, time management, financial planning, and grant writing. And since taking care of yourself is essential to success in any realm, we also provide sessions on topics such as self-defense and healthy eating. Visit our Events page for a list of upcoming workshops.

Mentoring: The WLC will pair interested students with mentors from Alfred University's Alumna database. This service is in addition to MentorNet, which is described below. Fill out a profile sheet available by emailing us. Meet with the WLC director to discuss possible mentor matches, and before long you will be corresponding about career and life issues with your mentor.

MentorNet: MentorNet is a nonprofit e-mentoring network service for students in engineering, science, math, and technology. MentorNet’s emphasis is on under-represented groups such as women and students of color, but all students are welcome to participate. The following are highlights of what the program has to offer:

  1. Industry e-mentoring: This MentorNet program will pair AU graduate or undergraduate students with professional engineers or scientists in email-based mentoring relationships.
  2. Academic e-mentoring: This MentorNet program will pair AU graduate students in engineering with tenured faculty in email-based mentoring relationships.
  3. Resume Database: MentorNet also has a Resume Database where all students at AU can post their resume for MentorNet’s industry sponsors to review.

The service is free. For more information, visit http://www.mentornet.net.

WLC’s Closet: A lending closet of professional clothes for women is now available at the WLC. Do you have an interview coming up but nothing appropriate to wear? Come see what’s hanging in our closet.
