Fiat Lux reporter nabs scoop: interview with former DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

Alfred University junior Will Cooley is working on his BFA at the School of Art & Design, New York State College of Ceramics. He also describes himself as an avid consumer of political news, and he brings his interest in art, politics, and the news to his volunteer work for the university newspaper, The Fiat Lux, writing about international and national issues and creating cover designs for the paper.

Alfred University holds fourth annual DC Purple City event

Nearly 30 Alfred University students and a group of faculty and staff traveled to the nation’s capital March 18-20 for the fourth annual DC Purple City Student Leadership Forum. The event, themed “Leading With a Purpose,” was supported by Washington, D.C.-area alumni and featured 16 alumni panelists and speakers.

Alfred University students’ senior capstone studies ways to protect satellite batteries from intense heat

Three undergraduate mechanical engineering majors at Alfred University are studying how to mitigate the affects of heat generated by batteries powering satellites orbiting the earth, thus prolonging the battery life and that of the satellites.

Strategic Marketing students bring products to life

At Alfred University, learning doesn’t stop at theory, but extends into real-world application. In the Strategic Marketing course taught by Brittany Thierman, assistant professor of marketing, students are challenged to move beyond textbook materials and step into the role of marketers, creators, and entrepreneurs. This semester, that challenge took shape in the writing, publishing, and marketing of books on Amazon.

ACAM to host 21st Perkins Lecture April 2

The Alfred Ceramic Art Museum will host the 21st Perkins Lecture of Ceramic History Thursday, April 2, welcoming artist Eugene Ofori Agyei and curator Larry Ossei-Mensah in the Nevins Theater of the Powell Campus Center. The lecture will begin at 4:30 pm.

AHA! Competition turns students’ ideas into opportunities

Each year, the AHA! Allegany County Startup Collegiate Competition brings together students who want to test ideas that can actually become businesses in the future. The competition invites students from Alfred University, Houghton University, and Alfred State College to pitch their startup business ideas in front of judges, compete for cash prizes, and see if what they built holds up.

Western equestrian team qualifies for national championships

The Alfred University western equestrian team placed fourth at last weekend’s Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Semi-Finals, hosted by Findlay (Ohio) University. The Saxons’ performance in the Semi-Finals show Saturday and Sunday, March 21 and 22, earned them a spot in the IHSA National Championships as one of the top 12 teams in the nation.
