Joël Brodovsky-Adams, who earned am M.F.A. degree from the School of Art and Design, New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, has been named a 2025 Artist Fellow at the prestigious Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in New York City.
Brodovsky-Adams will participate in a six-month residency through MAD’s highly competitive Artist Studios program.
A ceramic artist originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Brodovsky-Adams creates wheel-thrown forms with richly patterned and decorated surfaces that often take the form of functional sculpture and ceramic "furniture." His practice combines technical skill with imaginative design, engaging audiences with forms that are as tactile and dynamic as they are contemplative.
Brodovsky-Adams’ artistic journey began in 2013 at L’aluminé ceramics studio in Montreal and continued through formal studies at NSCAD University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, where he completed a post-baccalaureate certificate in 2021. He has exhibited internationally, including at the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada), Studio 21 (Halifax), and Sculpture Space (New York City). His work has also been influenced by his residency at the Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center in Denmark.
The MAD Artist Studios program is the only residency of its kind in New York City, offering museum visitors a rare opportunity to engage with artists as they work on site. Residents maintain open studio hours Wednesday through Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., allowing the public to witness the creative process firsthand and engage directly with artists. Established in 2008, the program has supported more than 200 artists and designers and is recognized as a leading model for museum-based education and professional development.
The MAD Artist Fellowship—introduced in 2016—specifically supports the practices of emerging NYC-based artists from historically underrepresented communities. Alumni of the program have gone on to exhibit at MAD and other world-renowned institutions including the Whitney Museum, Brooklyn Museum, and Studio Museum in Harlem.
Brodovsky-Adams’ residency at MAD affirms Alfred University’s commitment to fostering innovation in the arts and supporting alumni as they engage with national and international audiences.
