Mehdi Kabir, assistant professor of mechanical engineering in Alfred University’s Inamori School of Engineering, recently published a research article in Energies, a peer-reviewed journal that covers a broad range of energy science topics.
Four Alfred University alumni, and former students of Kabir, co-authored the paper with him. The alumni, all 2025 graduates with bachelor’s degrees in mechanical engineering, are Andrew Cisco, Dominic McKinney, Izaiah Smith, and Billy Moore.

The article is titled “Battery Module Thermal Management of CubeSats and Small Satellites Using Micro-/Nano-Enhanced Phase-Change Material Heat Sinks.” It discusses research that introduced passive thermal management strategies for developing lightweight, high-performance heat sinks capable of maintaining electronic circuits and battery modules within acceptable thermal safety thresholds for small spacecraft, with particular emphasis on CubeSat platforms.
